After exploring the villages, prepare for a ride of 138 km on paved roads to Vieng Thong. The town, originally known as Muang Hiam, translates to "watch out," a name that reflects its status as a habitat for several endangered species, including tigers. This makes Vieng Thong a gateway to the Nam Et-Phou Louey National Protected Area.

Start your day with a hearty breakfast before heading to Muang Kham, a quiet town northeast of Phonsavan. Take Route 5 toward Nam Nguen, then turn left 3 km from Muang Kham to reach Tham Piew Cave. This cave serves as a solemn memorial to 400 villagers killed in a 1968 US missile attack during the Secret War, marked by smoke damage and simple memorial cairns. Inside, locals burn incense to honor the deceased. After this poignant visit, unwind at a nearby hot spring before returning to Muang Kham.
